How Project Literacy Works
You choose your own schedule and Project Literacy matches you with a trained volunteer tutor. You and your tutor will meet one-on-one every week for 2 hours. Your tutor can help you with your literacy goals. Literacy is more than just reading books -- together you and your tutor can prepare for tests, apply for jobs, write emails, practice communication, and more.
Take the first step toward your goals and reach out to Project Literacy today!
Be a Volunteer Tutor
Teaching experience is not necessary. We are looking for individuals who show empathy, respect, and patience for others in the learning process. We will provide you with training and support!
Volunteer tutors must:
- Live in Alameda County
- Be 18 years old or older and have a high school diploma or GED
- Speak, read, and write English well
- Complete a self-paced online orientation and three training workshops
- Tutor a minimum of 2 hours per week for a period of at least 6 months
- Prepare for weekly tutoring lessons
- Pass fingerprinting/Live Scan
Volunteer Tutor Training
Project Literacy holds tutor training opportunities several times a year. Training consists of two parts: you must first complete a self-paced online orientation, and then attend three 90-minute in-person workshops held at the main San Leandro Public Library.
The next in-person training will be these three workshops:
